Wine Tastingin Ibiza

Wine is one of life’s great pleasures and in Ibiza, there are rolling fields of red-hued land dedicated purely to its production – this island likes to revel in the good times, after all, and as we know, wine is one of the primary facilitators of that so it makes sense that the pair go together like warm bread and cheese. Viticulture was initially brought to Ibiza by the Phoenicians, and today there are a handful of wineries on the island, each benefiting from the unique set of climatic conditions that’s bestowed upon an island in the middle of the Mediterranean.

Rich, terracotta-coloured clay is topped by a chalky surface, and when combined with a distinctly subtropical climate, it creates wine-making heaven. It’s possible to get up close and personal with the vines on a specially guided tour, which often including tapas, a lesson or two about winemaking, and a visit to the winery restaurant and shop. But let’s be honest, you’re mostly here for the wine tasting and no one can blame you for that.

Where to go wine tasting in Ibiza

Ibizkus Wines

One of Ibiza’s most well-known boutique wineries, Ibizkus is famed for making premium rosé, red and white wines using local grape varieties including Monastrell and Malvasia. Its most famous drop is probably the pale pink Ibizkus rosé, which tastes best with Balearic sea views and your toes in the sand. Don’t take our word for it though, head to the Santa Eulalia winery for a tasting session on its alfresco terrace, where wines are paired with traditional Spanish delicacies.

Bodegas Can Maymó Winery

Located near San Mateo (Sant Mateu), a tiny village in the north of Ibiza, Can Maymó is a small, family-run vineyard that’s been in operation since the early ’90s. They also use the Ibizan Monastrell and Malvasia grapes, but have recently expanded into the lush valleys of Santa Agnès to include Moscatell varieties into their production processes for white wine, as well as Merlot, Tempranillo and Syrah for red wines. Gastronomy tours here are a must.

Bodegas Can Rich Winery

As well as specialising in a range of delicious, ecological wine, Can Rich also boasts a range of other typical Balearic products in its arsenal, including sparkling wines, Ibicencan liqueurs, olive oil, vinegar and famously, salt, which makes the perfect souvenir to take home in your suitcase. Located in the hills surrounding San Antonio, this picture perfect vineyard is the perfect place to while away an afternoon.

Sa Cova Winery

Aged in barrels for over 12 months, the wines at Sa Cova were initially made using the Monastrell grape, but the production has grown to include other varieties, which line their well-stocked cellars. Stocked in shops and restaurants across Ibiza, Sa Cova is the oldest winery on the island, bursting with stories and tradition.

Other Ibiza wine tasting locations

Oenophiles should also check out Enotecum, where according to GHL Ibiza partner, Philip Gould, the team is fabulously knowledgeable and can help source any wine. Philip also rates Bodegas Ribas, which stocks high-end wines at very reasonable prices. Meanwhile, GHL Ibiza founder René Heinz recommends a trip to Vino y Co, a wine shop specialising in rare, delicious drops including wine and sake, and the purveyors of the New Year’s Day Swim in Salinas, where people run into the sea to shake off their hangovers from the celebrations the night before. The Vino y Co team doles out glasses of wine for the shivering once people reemerge, and you’ll often find the GHL Ibiza team with big smiles and blue lips on the shoreline! It’s also worth hopping on the ferry to the neighbouring island of Formentera, which despite its diminutive size, produces world-class, innovative wines by the barrel-full.
