In recent years, Ibiza’s credentials as a foodie destination have really been amplified – it’s now one of the most sought-after islands in the Mediterranean for great food and good times. And while those in-the-know have always revelled in Ibiza’s diverse range of restaurants, now that reputation is spreading internationally and people are landing on the island’s shores from all over the road in search of plates that pack a flavour punch.
From traditional dishes with a creative twist and innovative cocktails, to beach restaurants specialising in seafood and utterly unique tapas bars, there is a culinary option that suits every taste and type in Ibiza. These are some of our favourite island hotspots.
A New York-inspired deli in the heart of Santa Gertrudis, what these folks don’t know about focaccia doesn’t exist. Fluffy, chewy, aromatic, and stuffed with all kinds of tasty fillings, it’s made using an ancient organic grain that’s easy to digest. This rustic eatery also sells a hand-picked selection of Salumi and Formagi, so settle in for a feast of bread made with love by experts or take a bit of everything home to have a private picnic on your own terrace.
Ibicencans simply can’t get enough of this Ibiza restaurant and that’s no surprise when you learn it does some of the most delicious fish and seafood dishes available anywhere on Ibiza. The paella here is especially famous, but it’s also worth sampling the bullit de peix, a traditional Balearic fish stew loved by ibicencos. Located near Cala d’Hort overlooking the island of Es Vedrá, plates here are served with a side of spectacular sea views.
Nestled within the walls of a 300-year old townhouse in the quaint village of San Carlos, the Giri Café serves a Mediterranean style menu in a stunning garden space that’s shaded by trees. Using locally sourced and organic ingredients, the ethos here is about quality ingredients that shine on the plate, always reflecting the changing seasons. Guilt-free dining at its best at this Mediterranean restaurant.
This luxury beach restaurant, located on the beach of the same name, is a five-star seaside experience. The essence of Ibizan hospitality, the full gamut of seafood dishes is covered. From paella to fideua to bullit de peix to arroz a banda. Dine with your toes in the sand, rosé in hand, and Mediterranean sparkling in the distance.
A small Ibiza beach restaurant nuzzled within the tiny cove of Cala Gracioneta, this eatery is the best kind of low-key luxury. Tick into tapas or sharing plates to start, then move on to fresh meat and fish grilled to perfection and served with a selection of vegetables or fries. The seafood rice is another standout dish but to be honest you can’t go wrong at this restaurant – with a cocktail in hand and the sea crashing just beyond, it makes for an idyllic Ibizan scene.
A family-run seafood restaurant on the shores of Es Cavallet on the south coast, this beachside spot has been perfecting the same delicious dishes for decades. The paella is the special recipe of Yaya – the family’s grandmother, but the pièce de resistance is the salt-baked sea bass that’s been made using salt from the nearby salt flats of Salinas. Unpretentious and relaxed, this restaurant is loved by locals and visitors alike.
An undisputed Ibiza favourite located among the lush countryside of San Lorenzo (Sant Llorenç), this restaurant has indoor and outdoor space but is all about alfresco dining on balmy summer days. Tuck into plates of homemade food made using the very best local ingredients and revel in an authentic Ibiza experience. Kick off your sandals and settle in beneath the heavy boughs of fruit trees – utter bliss.
An Ibiza restaurant that long ago earned its place in island history by reportedly turning away the King of Spain because he didn’t have a reservation, this ramshackle restaurant serves seafood that’s been freshly caught and cooked. Shaded under cream-coloured parasols and with a cold caña in hand, there are few places you’d rather be than hear on a hot Mediterranean day.
The newest addition to the shores of Cala Jondal, this beach restaurant is already a favourite among the visiting jet-set and Ibiza A-List. The food is simple but spectacular, made using only the finest ingredients, and enhanced by stunning views of the beach and endless blue skies. Partner of GHL Ibiza, Philip Gould, says that it’s probably the best food available anywhere on the island. Praise indeed!
Set back on the golden shores of Santa Eulalia Bay, this beach club is great for laid-back seaside lunches and family feasts. The seasonal menu spans both Eastern and Western influences, making for a lively feast for the senses to be enjoyed while you soak up the rays on the sun-drenched, sandy terrace.
Recommended by René Heinz, fellow founder of GHL Ibiza, Can Curuné is an unassuming but high quality restaurant near San Juan that’s recently been taken over by the famous World Family Ibiza. His suggestion? Head to the restaurant on Mexican night, when the best Mexican food available anywhere on Ibiza is served up full of zest and spice in colourful surroundings.
Billed as Italian haute-cuisine with a twist, both Philip and René list this Ibiza restaurants as one of their favourites. A hotspot at any time of the year but a great hangout in winter, the food here is crafted to perfection and served with heartfelt care and attention. For something special, try the sea bass toast with caviar – it’s already an Ibiza institution.
