When it comes to buying or renting property in Ibiza, there are myriad elements that feed into that all-important final decision, and usually one of the main factors is simply personal preference. Some people prefer Balearic sea views (and who can blame them!), while others would rather be nestled amid the island’s pine trees; some prefer to be at the beating heart of the island’s urban centres, while others take solace from total peace and quiet of the countryside. There is no one-size-fits-all recipe for finding the perfect villa or apartment, and that’s where GHL Ibiza comes in.

One of the most popular areas that we get 4-5 bedroom finca and villa requests about here at GHL Ibiza is the bustling town of Santa Gertrudis. Located at the epicentre of the island, Santa Gertrudis is often referred to as the Notting Hill of Ibiza, Spain thanks to its distinct community atmosphere and bevy of expats from all across Europe. A hotbed for young families, it’s buzzing with activity from day to night, particularly around the picturesque local square overlooked by an ancient church and adjoined by a kids’ playground. Here, lines of restaurants look out onto the plaza, offering an array of delicious food with the irresistible combination of watching the world go by.
Among these restaurants is Bar Costa, both an island and a Santa Gertrudis institution that’s been around since the ‚70s. Specialising in simple bocadillos (sandwiches) and fresh plates of cured meats, inside the walls are adorned with a multitude of paintings. It’s said that back in the day, people would swap their artworks for food when they had no money, and Bar Costa would gladly accept. These days, people stop by for morning coffees or for long lunches on the terrace with friends, but the activity continues well into the warm Balearic night, where as the temperature drops, the chatter ramps up a notch.
Elsewhere in Santa Gertrudis and there’s no end of famous eateries for residents to choose from. Macao Café is a favourite among both locals and tourists alike. Always busy and with a spirited ambience, the lively terrace is great for sharing a few g&ts on a sunny afternoon. Just next door is new opening Vivo Bistrot, which specialises in a heathy, sustainable menu and is the first place on the island to feature cactus on the menu – be sure to try the vegan tacos to taste it for yourselves. Finca La Plaza is located just off the main square and is akin to dining within your own private secret garden, while L’Atelier No. 74 is a restaurant-cum-workspace that offers fabulous food and inspiring workshops for kids.
But of course, if you’re buying or renting a property in Santa Gertrudis, you’ll want to make haste to one of the town’s many interiors stores to dress your villa in style. Es Cucons La Tienda is beloved by all, thanks to its easy breezy, Scandi-inspired wares that add a touch of effortless chic to any home. Meanwhile, La Galeria Elefante just a few minutes drive outside of Santa Gertrudis is a haven of homeware goods, as well as fashion, books and all manner of different trinkets. And then there’s Sluiz, also just outside the town of Santa Gertrudis, an enormous space that specialises in off-the-wall designs and an array of items that you never knew you needed. Perfect for filling a new two-bedroom property or single-storey house, or for kitting out the en-suite that you’ve always wanted. Watch out for their end of season sale!
